Review: The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina By Arianna Canavan

Netflix recently came out with a tv show about Sabrina the teenage witch. Not sure whether or not to watch it? Take a look at this review!

Netflix has blessed us with another binge-worthy show and I love it. Sabrina Spellman is a half mortal and witch, living in the middle of a small town named Greendale. She is about to turn sixteen and when she does she has to choose between her witch or her moral side. This woman can fight through demons, the Vatican, witches and even the darkest of them all, the dark lord (the devil).

Sabrina is basically a feminist fighting for what she thinks is right, which is being challenged by the church of night - that is run by only men.

Personally I enjoyed this show that was filmed in Vancouver and I absolutely love the diversity of the featured characters. Besides Sabrina, our main character, we have ourselves a nonbinary actor playing a nonbinary character: Lachlan Watson in the role of Susie. Susie undergoes a rollercoaster of emotions, trying to understand her identity and faces many realistic challenges along the way, such as being bullied. She is definitely a storm of fire that protects her friends and family and is willing to sacrifice herself if need be. Then we have our pansexual British warlock name Ambrose Spellman, played by Chance Perdomo. Even though Ambrose Spellman is spellbound to the Spellman house, that doesn't stop him from finding true love and it's honestly so heartwarming. But that's not everyone in the Spellman family yet, we still have our favorite Spellman sisters who are Sabrina’s legal guardians after her parents allegedly died in a plane crash. Hilda and Zelda Spellman are polar opposite to each other: Hilda is the fun-loving aunt who is kind and bakes desserts while Zelda is stubborn and strict. Zelda is devoted to the dark lord but willing to break some rules to protect her family. Hilda isn't devoted but she does desire revenge on her sister Zelda due to past conflict and trauma between them.

If you already thought this show couldn't get any better, then be surprised by the amazing soundtrack. My all-time favorite song of the show is A little Wicked by Valerie Broussard and this song basically makes me want to wear a full royal dress, dress head to toe with jewels and a big crown and sit on a throne because ‘no one calls you honey when you're on a throne’. Another great song included is Black Magic Woman by VCTRY, which is a song for only the baddest of women and I've been playing it non stop since I first heard it. And hey if there's anyone turning sixteen like Sabrina: Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen by Neil Sedaka has a nice vintage touch to it. This song was used for the trailer and is so well fitting, especially the lyrics ‘But since you've grown up, your future sewn up, from now on you're gonna be mine’. On Sabrina’s sixteenth birthday her whole family, the Vatican and even the dark lord had plans for her, you can say, Sabrina’s future was sewn up right in front of poor Sabrina’s eyes.

All in all, I can say is that this show is amazing and the perfect series for anyone to binge on this winter. 10/10
